13. Genesis 3.6
Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
Ufda! What can we learn from Genesis 3:6 during Advent? Why even turn to the origin of sin in the human race?
Of course the coming of Jesus saves His people from their sin and that is worthy to ponder but the sting of it all is right there in Genesis 3:6. The serpent had arrived in the garden and had spoken with his forked tongue. Introducing doubt to the inhabitants concerning the motives of God. And then the choice is made. We are even given in Scripture the reasoning behind the choice.
Eve saw. Eve decided. Eve ate. Adam watched. Adam was silent. Adam ate. Nowhere in their reasoning. In their motivations. In their decision is their evidence that they relied upon God. They trusted themselves.
May we learn to discern in our own lives this Advent season how often we turn from God to trust ourselves. How deeply we need to be saved from our sins. How frequently we are tempted to doubt God.
May we be grateful from His arrival and may we glory in His imminent return.
