Philippians 3:20-21
Home is an interesting concept. It has so many connotations and intricacies. Where is your home? We have heard it said that “Home is where your heart is;” “Home is where love resides;” or maybe “Home is where one starts from.” Maybe your mind goes down the same path mine does to the old hymn, “This world is not my home.”
Naomi and I have been discussing what is home to us. We found a house, that is true, we are moving into it this week, but how do we make it a home? It used to be easy, set up beds, make a pizza and have a root beer, we made it home. Now though, it is just the two of us, learning to make home together for the 2nd time in 25 years.
What is home to you? Do you feel at home? What makes you feel like you are home? The hardest part about these questions is that it deals with feelings. It is subjective and hard to develop a frame of reference to understand what home feels like.
While my frame of reference for Home has shifted with my kids moving out, pizza and root beer not being the best diet, and my bed being in storage until the end of the week. My definition of home is not based on temporal things, but rather on what Jesus teaches me about following Him.
Jesus warned people that wanted to be His disciples, “Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."” Matthew 8:20. Jesus understood that His home was not on this earth and His ministry was dangerous, costing Him and many of His disciples their lives. Where is home for God’s children?
This world is not my home, I am just passing through! Our home is with God, scripture affirms this for us as we look to Hebrews 11:13-16, 13:14; 1 Peter 2:11; 2 Corinthians 5:1-5; Colossians 3:1-4; and Philippians 3:20-21 which says:
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.
Our call as disciples is to follow Christ, He is leading us into all eternity. We are told in John 141-3:
1 "Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.2 "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.3 "If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.
My Home is with Christ, my heart is with Him, His love helps me reside with Him. He is my starting point in all things and He is the goal of my life. No matter how we feel, we as disciples are at home with Jesus.
