1 Peter 2:1-3

One of my favorite quotes from a book in my childhood was, “As the days begin to lengthen, the cold begins to strengthen.”  This practical wisdom was a grand reminder that after the winter solstice the coldest days of the year were yet to come.  This quote was my first interaction with a proverb as a child that I can remember.  First recorded in 1639 in England it was a reminder that although the days were no longer getting shorter, winter had just begun.

As we come into February and face a continuing winter it is hard to imagine what summer will look like.  Many friends are taking trips to warmer weather; I have considered doing the same.  The cold beauty of our winters draws my heart not to escape but to revel in the warmth of God’s word.  When all seems bleak, I turn to the words that nourish.

1 Peter 2:1-3 has been a passage dear to my heart this past week.  As I have thought about it and sat quietly mulling it over God has reminded me that there is life in His words.  The scriptures say:

1 Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, 2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 3 if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.

The transformation of the believer’s heart moves from fallen revelry to longing for the things of God.  1 Peter tells us to set aside our sinful desires and crave the pure milk of the word.  It is what feeds us, encourages us, and builds us up to face the coldest days.  It seems like we are facing colder days more often now.

Consider these Proverbs and the wisdom that God would impart.

Proverbs 23:12 “12 Apply your heart to discipline And your ears to words of knowledge.”

What discipline do you need to apply to your heart?  What areas are untrained or struggling to rely upon God?  What do you not understand about God and His word?  What do you need to learn next?

Proverbs 27:17 “17 Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another.”

Who is sharpening your life? Who are you sharpening? Who are you praying for? What do you need prayer for?

If your relationship with God has felt cold or distant, now is the time to rediscover the warmth of God’s word applied to your life.  Take time to read God’s word and reflect each day, build a habit of consuming God’s word.  Find a friend to gain wisdom and ask for help to develop discipline in your relationship with God.  Once you have tasted the kindness of the Lord, you crave the truth of His word all the more.
