15. Come On Up
1 Samuel 14:6 Then Jonathan said to the young man who was carrying his armor, “Come and let us cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; perhaps the LORD will work for us, for the LORD is not restrained to save by many or by few.”
In this account of Jonathan and his armor bearer we are witness to an incredible faith. The Israelites were in hiding from the Philistines and Jonathan does not want to keep hiding so he leaves his cave to confront a garrison of the enemy.
He says he is going and his armor bearer goes with him willingly. Jonathan doesn’t know if he will succeed and vanquish his foes or if he will die at their hands but he is going. In verse six we see his faith. He knows God can save by many and by few. And dare we add in this advent season by One.
As they prepare to go he tells his armor bearer that if they call to the Philistines and the Philistines tell them to wait and the Philistines will come to them well then Jonathan will do battle. But if they say come up the mountain to us then God had delivered the Philistines into Jonathan’s hands. And that is exactly how it happens. God delivered Jonathan and the Israelites that day by the faith of one man and his armor bearer.
As they arrived at the foot of the hill they didn’t know what would happen but they knew God. Beloved, is there something in your life that you just don’t know what is going to happen? Can you find peace in knowing God? That He can save by many or by few?
