18. A Very Real Question

Genesis 3:9  Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”

In Genesis 3.9 God arrives in the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve had fallen into sin. We may wonder the tone of His voice when He asked this question.

It isn’t as if God didn’t actually know where Adam was. The point is that Adam wasn’t where he was supposed to be. When God came to the Garden the normal course of action was for Adam to walk with God in the cool of the day. Or maybe it was normal. Maybe Adam was often busy in the Garden tending it when God would come and the normal question was, “Hey Adam, where are you. Let’s go for our walk.”

It really is a beautiful thing when we think about it. Walking with God. Enjoying the conversation. Relating to one another.

Of course we know as we read Genesis that Adam was hiding because he was afraid of God. Is it possible that when God arrived in the Garden Adam thought He would be angry with Him and so he heard the question in an angry tone? (Not that God was angry but that Adam thought He would be)

If God were to arrive at your door tonight and ask, “Where are you?” How would you hear that question? Beloved, God has arrived by sending His Son Jesus to save His people from their sin. Just like He arrived in Eden and made coverings for Adam and Eve once they were naked. He covers our sin. We are loved. God has arrived and we can walk with Him once again.
