19. Arrives to Anoint
1 Samuel 16: 3 “You shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you.” 4 So Samuel did what the Lord said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “Do you come in peace?” 5 He said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.
God had rejected Saul as King and so He sent Samuel on a mission to anoint a new king. One of His own choosing. So God sends Him to a man named Jesse who lived in Bethlehem. Jesse arrives at the city and was greeted by the elders of that city. Their question was if he came in peace. He answered that he came in peace to sacrifice to the Lord. While Jesse and his sons entered the place where the sacrifice would take place Samuel sees who he thinks will be anointed king. But God passes over all the sons that Samuel thought would be king. Finally Jesse remembers he has one more son and calls for him to come. David.
When he came to the sacrifice God spoke and told Samuel to anoint him king. And the Holy Spirit came upon David mightily.
Samuel arrived in Bethlehem to anoint a king. Everyone he saw and thought would be God’s choice was not His chosen king. David was God’s choice. Samuel anointed him king and God was with David.
During this Advent season what is God calling you to do? How is He asking you to respond to the coming of Christ? Are your eyes deceiving you when it comes to the specific actions of God’s choosing? Remember that God does not look on the outward appearance but upon the heart.
